Pause video and audio in other tabs

Pause the video or audio playing in your tabs from the keyboard, play again only what you paused, or jump to the tab making the sound.

Commands

Pause Media
Pause what’s playing in this tab and in tabs making sound
Resume Media
Play again only what Pause Media stopped
Go to Playing Tab
Jump to the tab that’s making sound

A video starts playing somewhere in your twenty tabs, or a call is about to begin and the podcast is still going. You don’t have to find the tab first. Open the palette wherever you are, type pause and press Enter.

Pause what’s playing

Pause Media shows up while a tab is playing sound. It pauses the video and audio in the tab you’re on and in each tab making sound, including players embedded in a page, like a YouTube video inside a blog post.

From a regular window it never touches tabs in a private window.

Play it again

Resume Media shows up once Vokto has paused something. It plays again only what Pause Media stopped. A video you had paused yourself stays paused, and so does anything you start again by hand and then pause.

Find the noisy tab

Go to Playing Tab takes you to the tab that’s making sound. When several tabs are playing, press Enter to list them by title and site, then pick one. The tab you’re on isn’t in the list.

When Vokto can’t pause it

Not every sound comes from a page’s video or audio player. Games, synths and a few music apps make theirs another way, and Vokto can’t pause those. Chrome’s own pages and the Chrome Web Store are closed to extensions too. If nothing could be paused, Vokto says so and the palette stays open.

Mute the tab instead. Type t:, find the tab, press ⌥ Option Enter (Alt Enter on Windows and Linux) and pick Mute Tab. Mute / Unmute Domain silences every tab from the site you’re on.

Skipping to the next or previous track isn’t possible: sites don’t let extensions control that.
