Reading and accessibility

Reader view, dark page and more

Change how a page looks when it’s hard to read. Show just the article, darken it or enlarge the text. Most modes are remembered for each site.

Commands

Reader View
Just the article, without the clutter around it
Dark Page
Turn a bright page dark, with images left as they are
Large Text
Make all the text on the page bigger
Improve Typography
Comfortable text size, line spacing and line length
Keep Content
Hide menus and sidebars but keep the site’s own look
Text-Only Mode
Hide images and video
High Contrast
White text on black, with yellow links
Sepia Mode
A warm, paper-like tint
Monochrome
Show the page in shades of gray
Enhanced Focus Indicators
A bright outline around whatever has keyboard focus

Some pages are hard on the eyes. Tiny gray text, a glaring white background late at night, an article squeezed between ads and menus. These modes change how the page in front of you looks, without touching anything on the site itself.

Turn a mode on or off

Open the palette, search for the mode, and press Enter. Run the same command again to turn it off. Modes that are on show an “Active” label in the list.

The modes

Mode What it does
Reader View Shows just the article in a clean view over the page
Keep Content Hides menus, headers, footers, sidebars and pop-up bars, keeping the site’s styling
Text-Only Mode Hides images and video and flattens backgrounds
Dark Page Inverts the colors so a light page turns dark, leaving images as they are
High Contrast White text on black, with yellow links
Large Text Makes text one and a half times its size
Sepia Mode Adds a warm sepia tint
Monochrome Shows everything in grayscale
Improve Typography Sets readable text size, line height and width
Enhanced Focus Indicators Draws a bright orange outline around the focused link or button

If Reader View can’t find an article on the page, a message tells you so and the page stays as it was.

Remembered for each site

Turn on Dark Page for a site and it’s there the next time you visit, applied as the page loads, before you even open the palette. The same goes for every mode except Reader View and Keep Content, which last for the page you’re on. A mode that came back on by itself shows an “Auto” label. Other sites stay just as they were.

See and undo what’s on

When anything is on, a small label next to the search box says how many changes are active here, and an Active Page Changes… row sits at the top of the list. Open it to turn each one off with a single row. When two or more are on, Clear This Site’s Changes turns them all off at once.

Site Settings… lists every site where you’ve saved a mode and lets you remove them one at a time. It includes the reading aids from Dyslexia-friendly reading and color vision, which are remembered the same way.
