Tabs
Rename a tab
Give a tab a name you’ll recognize, like “Q3 budget” instead of “Untitled spreadsheet”, and keep it through reloads.
Skip the menus: type rename: in the palette.
Commands
- Rename Tab...
- Type a new name for the tab you’re on
- Reset Tab Name
- Go back to the page’s own title
Five tabs called “Dashboard”, or a title that keeps changing as new mail arrives, all look alike in the tab strip. Give the one you care about a name you’ll know at a glance.
Rename a tab
- Open the palette and choose Rename Tab…, or type
rename:. - The current title is already filled in. Type the name you want, and the row shows it as you go.
- Press Enter.
It keeps its name
Some sites keep rewriting their own title, with unread counts or the name of whatever page you’re on in the app. They can’t overwrite yours. The name stays when you reload, and when you move to another page in the same tab.
If you snooze the tab, it comes back with the same name. Close the tab and the name goes with it.
Go back to the original
Reset Tab Name shows up when a tab has a custom name. It brings back the
page’s own title, the latest one the page set. Clearing the box after
rename: offers the same reset.
Only this tab, only this computer
A new name applies to the tab you’re on. Names are stored only in your browser and never synced to your other devices, since a tab name can say something private.
